SEPTEMBER 29: JIVAMUKTI YOGA with HARI-KIRTANA DAS
The Yoga of Liberation: An Introduction to Jivamukti Yoga
Jivamukti Yoga, one of the nine internationally recognized styles of Hatha Yoga , is a mehtod that integrates the physical, philosophical, and the spiritual aspects of Yoga. Developed in 1984 by Sharon Gannon and David Live, Jivamukti classes involve a virgorous flow of postures that will challenge you on many levels. Each class revolves around a theme based on ancient wisdom texts and emphasizes the importance of practicing yoga with an elevated intention. Chanting, meditation, and inspiring music are integral parts of the complete Jivamukti Yoga experience. The name Jivamukti (pronouced Jee-va-mook-tee), taken from the Sanskrit jivan-individaul soul/ mukti- liberation, may be translated as “liberation while still living in the body.”. The goal of this practice is to help you attain your fullest potential in every sense; physical, spiritual, intellectual and emotional. Recommended for those familiar with basic vinyasa and Ashtanga yoga practice.
There will be discussion and asana practice.
Hari-kirtana das has had a life-long interest in yoga and yogic mysticism, beginning his study of yoga philosophy and meditation as a teenager. The devotional philosophy of bhakti yoga eventually provided the foundation for Hari-kirtana’s practice, and he was formally initiated into the Gaudiya Vaisnava tradition of Krishna bhakti, with its emphasis on kirtan, mantra meditation and the study of spiritual philosophy, in 1978. He spent the better part of the following four years living as a renounced yogi in various ashrams and spiritual communities. Hari-kirtana expanded his yoga practice at the Jivamukti Yoga School in New York City in 2007 and became a certified Jivamukti Yoga teacher in 2009. He currently holds an 800-hour teaching certification, speaks regularly at educational institutions on the relevance of traditional spiritual philosophy to life in the modern world, is a sought-after guest instructor for yoga teacher training courses, and teaches classes and workshops at yoga studios in Washington DC and throughout the mid-Atlantic region.
