SEPTEMBER 29: INTRODUCTION TO SANSKRIT with HARI-KIRTANA DAS
The Language of Yoga: Practical Sanskrit for Yoga Teachers and Students
Sanskrit, one of the oldest languages in the world, is considered the mother of all Indo- European languages. Meaning “perfectly composed”, Sanskrit has always been regarded as the sacred language of Yoga. We’ll learn proper pronunciation and how to recognize pronunciation cues, focus on word contruction and meanings, particularly as they apply to names of yoga asanas. We’ll look at the difference between mantras such as the mystical phrases of the ancient Upanishads, sutras or codified transmissions such as those in the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali and slokas such as the poetic verses of the Bhagavad-Gita. This will be a lecture and discussion format. All welcome.
Hari-kirtana das has had a life-long interest in yoga and yogic mysticism, beginning his study of yoga philosophy and meditation as a teenager. The devotional philosophy of bhakti yoga eventually provided the foundation for Hari-kirtana’s practice. Hari-kirtana expanded his yoga practice at the Jivamukti Yoga School in New York City in 2007 and became a certified Jivamukti Yoga teacher in 2009. He currently holds an 800-hour teaching certification, speaks regularly at educational institutions on the relevance of traditional spiritual philosophy to life in the modern world, is a sought-after guest instructor for yoga teacher training courses, and teaches classes and workshops at yoga studios in Washington DC and throughout the mid-Atlantic region.
