In this workshop, we will discuss some of the reasons we experience anxiety, how it affects our sleep and waking life, and which poses work the best to ameliorate these problems. A brief section on applicable Ayurvedic aspects will be included. Active and Restorative poses will be practiced. The focus will be on your personal practice as well as how to use this series when teaching.

Weekend Syllabus as follows:

Friday, 6:00-9:00pm: “Earth: Ishcia/Ilia”
This class explores the foundation of the spine at the pelvis and pelvic floor. Our aim is to create flexibility in the lateral hip rotatores and elasticity and support around the pelvic floor.

Saturday, 9:00-11:00am: “Water: Sacrum”
This class explores the fluidity and equilibrium of the sacrum and sacral-iliac joints, using movement and asana to access the lower psoas and abdomen and to begin to gain support from uddiyana bandha.

Saturday, 12:00-3:00pm: “Fire: Solar Plexus”

The kidney/adrenal area is typically a place where people grip and tighten, due to stress and emotional holding. This class includes movements to release the lumbar spine and upper psoas region. We emphasize twists and supported backbends in the asana practice and pranayama with focus on inhalation.

Saturday, 3:30-6:30pm: “Air: Chest Cavity”

This class emphasizes opening in the  upper ribs and sternal region. We emphasize release techniques for the shoulder joint, the clavicle and the first two ribs. We will also practice breath retention techniques in pranayama.

Sunday, 12:00-3:00pm: “Space: Neck/Palate/Ear”
In order to release pressure around the sensory organs, this class focuses on release around the tongue, jaw and throat. We will explore the practice of sensory withdrawal (pratyahara), including the uses of khechari mudra and “bumble bee breath” (bhramari pranayama).
